Susan May, AuD, a supervising audiologist at Moanalua Medical Center, has volunteered with the Healthy Athletes Special Olympics Summer Games for 20 years. For the past 14 years, she has served as Co-Director of the Healthy Hearing Organization, coordinating volunteers from Kaiser Permanente, the University of Hawaii and the community to provide health screenings for Olympic Games athletes. specials. Hearing screenings have greatly improved the quality of life of more than 3,500 athletes with an intellectual disability. She has also inspired significant volunteer support from her colleagues at Kaiser Permanente, many of whom perform physical exams for Summer Olympians. She trains University of Hawaii graduate students on how to screen people with disabilities. She volunteers with the Hawaii State Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, the American Cancer Society, and the annual Honolulu AIDS Walk. May will direct her $10,000 donation to the Kokua Kalihi Valley Roots Project.

The David Lawrence Community Service Award is named after David Lawrence, MD, former president and CEO of Kaiser Permanente and longtime advocate for better health.
